2016 Leadership & Advocacy Summit Resident Scholarships APPY NOW

2016 Leadership and Advocacy Summit Resident Scholarships – apply now

The American College of Surgeons is pleased to offer again this year a limited number of scholarships to Resident members of the American College of Surgeons who are interested in attending the upcoming Leadership and Advocacy Summit, taking place in at the JW Marriott in Washington DC, April 9-12, 2016.  The fifth annual Summit is a dual meeting that offers volunteer leaders and advocates specialized educational sessions focused on effective surgeon leadership, interactive advocacy training and coordinated visits to Congressional offices. (Click here for more information on the 2016 Leadership & Advocacy Summit programming.)

This scholarship award will cover up to $500.00 in housing and transportation costs.  This may also include your registration fees, but it may NOT cover food/beverage charges as all meals are provided at the conference. Note: you must be a U.S. Resident member in good standing with ACS to be eligible for one of these scholarships.

As a change from years past, scholarships will no longer be distributed on a “first come, first serve” basis.  Rather, scholarships will be awarded to a broad representation of all facets of ACS Resident members.  Special consideration will be given to first time attendees of the Leadership & Advocacy Summit, as well as candidates in the senior years of their residency programs.

There will also be an expectation that scholarship recipients: 1) will participate in 1-to-2 advocacy or ACS membership-focused conference calls or webinars within the 6 months following the Summit, and 2) must stay for all programming on Sunday, April 10th and Monday, April 11th, with preference given to those planning to stay through the Congressional Lobby Day on Tuesday, April 12th.

If you are interested in applying, please email D’Arcey Johnson (DJohnson@facs.org) before February 12, and include the following information:
1.       Your name
2.      Your contact information (address, email, phone no., cell no.)
3.      Your institution and year of residency
4.      A brief summary (no longer than one page) explaining why this opportunity interests you, what you hope to gain from it, and how you plan to utilize the knowledge you obtain.
5.      Your proposed travel dates

Scholarship winners will be announced on/before February 19th, in order to give you ample time to register and make travel arrangements.  For more information on the conference, including registration info (registration opens mid-January) and hotel information, please visit our website https://www.facs.org/advocacy/participate/summit-2016.  If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact D’Arcey directly at 202-337-2701.  We look forward to seeing you in Washington!
