GSACS 2010 Annual Meeting - If you weren't there, you missed a great event.

The President and the Executive Director of the American College of Surgeons joined a great faculty to present an awesome program at the Georgia Society of the American College of Surgeons Meeting last week-end.

Over 120 surgeons of all stripes, residents and medical students gathered at the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta to hear messages from the ACS and leaders in trauma and surgical care - Drs. David Feliciano and Dennis Ashley. The versatile program also included a presentation and panel discussion on NSQIP, advice on using social media and what to look for when merging, selling or buying a surgical practice. As always, the resident paper competitions were engaging and this year several new activities were added to the meeting.

Two of those new activities were lunchtime events. The Students and Residents luncheon included a panel discussion with several residency program directors from across the state and Dr. Lamar McGinnis, President of the ACS and Dr. David Hoyt, Executive Director of the ACS. Attendees of the SURGPAC luncheon were treated to an enlightening talk by Georgia State Representative Barry Loudermilk, a real friend to Georgia surgeons in the state legislature.

A family style barbeque complete with fun activities and games for the children attending was held on Saturday evening followed by the first annual GSACS Surgical Olympics. Six teams of residents competed in a timed round robin surgical skills competition to test their expertise. The team from Atlanta Medical Center claimed the gold medals, prizes and bragging rights this year. It was a fun evening for the adults and kids alike!

On Sunday, the education program concluded with the announcement of the winners of the resident paper competitions and the GSACS business meeting led by GSACS President Dr. James Elsey of Lawrenceville. During the business meeting, Dr. Hal Kent of Brunswick was elected President, Dr. Dewayne Colquitt of Atlanta was elected President-elect, Dr. Don Nakayama of Macon was elected Vice President and Dr. Dennis Ashley of Macon was elected Secretary.
