When I was a Navy General Medical Officer 30 years ago I spent some tours of duty at the U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center. Over the bar at the club, the Commanding Officer had posted this quote from Thucydides "A History of the Peloponnesian War" written in 404 B.C.: "We must remember that one man is much the same as another and that he is best who is trained in the severest school." This quote was stuck inside my head when I went back for my surgery residency.
